I read that book (partially) and it was rather boring. I dunno if it was the amount of work I had going on at the time or just the novel itself but I couldn't bring myself to trying to read it again. I bet it's great, I don't remember much. However, there is a movie filming about it ready to drop in 2006. Trend anyone?
I have always been a closeted sci-fi fan. The LotR movies exposed me. I was obsessed and still am. I have yet to finish reading The Two Towers(again) so I feel like a bad fan. I wonder about the explosion of fantasy books-turned-Hollywood blockbusters. I blame 9-11. (It is also the reason why more people my age in America are married. I mean, come on, 20 and you're already hitched? Gimme a break!) We're looking for that great escape from the war and the threat of terrorism. Fantasy gives you that. Good always triumphs over evil. True love always prevails. There's always a happy ending. It reflects the human condition. So many parallels have been made between the Rings trilogy and the Bible. And we all know the Bible is one of the most influential pieces of literature out there. We want to be shown that there is good at the end of all this tragedy. We also want to be the one who solves all the problems in 500 pages or less (or ninety minutes).
I wish I had English this semester so I could write a persuasive essay on the topic. Gah, maybe another time. Through my ramblings, it does make a bit of sense, yeah?
